Claire! It's Mia, from long-ago Berkeley and CPS days. Congratulations on the much-favorited and much-forwarded Slate article- it was great to see your name floating round the internet and to hear a little bit about the life you're creating for yourself in France. After Berkeley and Berlin and Brooklyn, I'm living rather unexpectedly in Ann Arbor, MI, which begins with an A not a B and which I never thought would be part of my bio. But I have work at the university and a lovely ManFriend, and there are certain virtues to living in a place that is easy. I haven't been to Paris in more than a decade now, but, like New York, it is a place that everyone comes back to eventually, and I would love to see you when I do. Don't want to put down my email address for fear of spam et al but I am easy to find through the University.
I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your columns in Slate about motherhood and living in France. I especially enjoyed the one I read today, about the conundrum that working mothers in France face. I am not a mother as of yet, but as a woman in her mid-30s, do see many of my friends struggle with the very real problem of balancing career and family. It is because of this that I have chosen to forgo family for now, in order to be successful in my chosen professional endeavors. It is very rare that I read articles/posts from mothers that I can connect to as well and I just wanted to pass on how much I enjoy your writing.
Best of luck to you in Paris and I hope that your job search is going well. I look forward to your first novel!
I am a Pre-Med and French major writing a research paper regarding the immigration and healthcare system in France and have come across many of your articles in my searches. I hope to come to Paris in early January for this research and would love to speak with you if you are available as I love all of your insights!
